Guildford MAN v FAT Football Club has achieved national recognition, winning the prestigious “Club of the Year” award at the recent MAN v FAT Football Awards. This accolade highlights the club's significant success in helping men across Surrey tackle weight loss through the power of football, and they are now inviting more men to join their ranks for the upcoming 2026 season.
MAN v FAT Football is a unique weight-loss programme specifically designed for men with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 27.5 or over. It cleverly integrates competitive football matches with a structured dietary and lifestyle plan. Before each game, participants weigh in, and their weight loss progress directly contributes to their team's league standing, alongside traditional match results. This innovative approach creates a highly motivating environment where health goals are intertwined with sporting achievement.
The benefits of joining are substantial. Members of the Guildford club alone have collectively shed over 1,000kg (one tonne) since its establishment in 2019, demonstrating the programme's effectiveness. Nationally, participants typically lose an average of 5% of their body weight within just 14 weeks. Beyond the numbers, MAN v FAT Football significantly improves overall health, reducing the risks associated with serious conditions like Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and strokes. It fosters both physical fitness and mental well-being by providing a supportive, non-judgmental community where men can pursue health goals alongside peers facing similar challenges.
Councillor Eleanor Evans, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, commended the Guildford club's “phenomenal success” and encouraged men to “kickstart a healthier lifestyle.” The programme is expanding its reach, with clubs also operating in Epsom, Woking, Redhill, and Spelthorne, making it accessible to men across the county. Men interested in joining the award-winning Guildford club or any other Surrey location can find more information and sign up for the new season starting in January 2026. This initiative offers a fun, effective, and community-driven pathway to better health for Surrey men.
