Residents in Guildford are expressing profound “disbelief” and anger following the sudden blocking of a cherished local walking route known as the “Back of the Mount.” This popular path, connecting Farnham Road to Down Place near the town centre, was recently fenced off by new landowners, Sir Richard and Lady Catherine Jewson, who assert it is private land with no public right of way. This abrupt closure has ignited a fierce community reaction, as the path has been an integral part of daily life for generations.

For decades, the “Back of the Mount” path has served as more than just a functional shortcut; it's a tranquil haven. As local resident Lorimer Burn articulated, “People actively want to walk along this path because it is so peaceful.” It has been a vital amenity for dog walkers, families, and commuters seeking a quiet escape, used unchallenged for at least 70 years.
