Guildford Flood Defence: New £79M Plans & Public Consultation

The Environment Agency has unveiled new plans for the Guildford Flood Alleviation Scheme (GFAS), a substantial £79 million project designed to protect the town from future flooding from the River Wey. This two-phase initiative aims to significantly reduce flood risk for both residential and commercial properties, along with vital infrastructure.
Phase one of the scheme concentrates on the upstream areas of Shalford and Peasmarsh. Proposed measures include the construction of new flood embankments, protective walls, a state-of-the-art pumping station, and a new spillway. This initial phase is projected to safeguard over 600 properties and critical transport links such as the A3, the London Waterloo railway line, and a crucial electricity substation, which have historically been vulnerable to flood events. The plans also detail significant environmental enhancements, promising the creation of 13 hectares of new wetland habitats, improved public access through new footpaths, and a boost to local biodiversity.
The broader benefits of the GFAS extend to protecting over 2,000 homes and businesses once both phases are complete, ensuring economic stability and resilience against the impacts of climate change. Phase two, which will address the Guildford town centre and downstream areas, is currently in the conceptual stage, with detailed plans to be developed in the future.
A key aspect of the project involves extensive public consultation, with exhibition events scheduled in Guildford, Shalford, and Peasmarsh during October and November. This period allows residents and stakeholders to review the proposals, provide feedback, and raise any concerns, ensuring community input helps shape the final design. While the scheme primarily emphasizes its protective and environmental benefits, incorporating public feedback and navigating the complexities of a large-scale infrastructure project represent ongoing challenges to ensure its successful and widely accepted implementation.
